Korean Skincare: Why it’s so Popular and Effective

As a beauty and aesthetic enthusiast, you’ve probably noticed that your social media ‘For You Page’ is filled with morning and evening skincare routines incorporating Korean skincare products. So why is that?

When it comes to skincare, South Korea has established itself as a global leader, setting trends that are embraced worldwide. The search for flawless skin is a universal goal, and Korean skincare has gained a dedicated international following for its quality, affordability and innovation. From the famous 10-step routine to its creative formulations incorporating natural holistic ingredients into practical products recognised for their efficacy and unique approach to skin health.

As a long-standing beauty and aesthetic academy with an in-depth understanding of science and product formulation, we want to use this blog to explain why Korean skincare is so popular and what makes it so effective.

The Korean Skincare Philosophy

Unlike most Western skincare products, which focus on targeting specific problems such as acne or ageing, Korean skincare products emphasise prevention, balance, and maintenance.

The goal isn’t to address visible and current skin issues but to ensure long-term health by nurturing the skin and preventing skin problems before they occur.

The preventive mindset encourages daily care and consistent use of products that nurture the skin.

The Natural Advantage : Core K-Skincare

One of the reasons Korean skincare is so effective is because of its focus on high-quality and naturally occurring ingredients inspired by natural remedies. Natural ingredients such as ginseng, green tea and licorice root are incorporated due to their proven benefits.

Here are some popular components that are often found in K-Skincare and what they do:

  • Snail Mucin – The multipurpose clear fluid snails secrete to help them stick to surfaces and create a protective barrier to keep germs out. Snail Mucin is recognised for its regenerative properties; even when incorporated into medicine to treat surgical infections, it helps with hydration, texture improvement and scar reduction.
  • Centella Asiatica – A soothing herb native to the tropical regions of Asia, Australia and Africa. Centella has gained popularity in skincare due to its ability to calm inflammation, strengthen the skin barrier and promote healing. Aside from being found in skincare, it is also used in traditional medicine and incorporated into culinary dishes.
  • Korean Ginseng This root plant has been used in traditional Asian medicine for thousands of years. It improves overall health, strengthens the immune system, and fights stress and disease. As a skincare ingredient, ginseng is rich in antioxidants, boosts collagen production, and enhances skin elasticity.
  • Propolis – Propolis extract is a resinous substance that bees create from trees and plants and mixed with their saliva. It is often harvested from hives and is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and deeply hydrating.

Nurturing the Skin Barrier

As can be seen from the ingredients outlined above, a key aspect of Korean skincare is the emphasis on protecting and strengthening the skin barrier. The skin barrier is the outermost part of the skin that keeps the moisture in and harmful substances out.

Korean skincare protects the skin barrier by using gentle and non-irritating ingredients and avoiding harsh ingredients like alcohol that strip the skin.

A compromised skin barrier can lead to dryness, sensitivity, and breakouts. Nurturing the skin barrier ensures that the skin is resilient and better equipped to handle environmental stresses.

10 Steps for Korean Skincare Routine

The 10-step routine is a signature of Korean skincare, and whilst it’s not practical for everyone, its ideology is the importance of a layered approach, with each step serving a purpose.

It’s not about overloading the skin but strategically layering products to achieve a specific purpose, from cleansing to hydration to targeted treatments. This approach ensures the skin receives a balanced mix of hydration, nourishment, and protection.

  1. Oil-based cleanser – Removes makeup, sunscreen and excess sebum without stripping the skin.
  2. Water-based cleanser – A traditional cleanser that removes sweat, dirt and impurities left behind after the first cleanse.
  3. Exfoliator – This can be a physical or chemical exfoliant that gently removes dead skin cells for a smoother texture and better product absorption.
  4. Toner – Prepares the skin by balancing its pH and adding a layer of hydration.
  5. Essence – A lightweight and nutrient-rich liquid that further hydrates and primes the skin for serums.
  6. Serums/Ampoule – Concentrated liquid designed for daily use and targets specific skin concerns such as fine lines, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles and acne.
  7. Sheet Mask – A thin face-shaped mask soaked in a serum containing active ingredients such as vitamins and acids to treat and hydrate the skin whilst indulging in self-care.
  8. Eye Cream – A thicker moisturiser that teats the delicate under-eye area, which is more prone to dryness and signs of ageing.
  9. Face Moisturiser – Seals in the hydration and protects the skin barrier with a less concentrated amount of active ingredients.
  10. Sunscreen – The most important step for those looking to prevent sun damage and premature ageing. Korean sunscreens are known for their lightweight textures, offering high protection without the greasy feeling or white cast often associated with Western options.

Each step is tailored to ensure the skin remains healthy, hydrated, and resilient.

Customisation and Accessibility

K-Skincare is renowned for its ability to cater to diverse skin types, ensuring everyone can find products suited to their specific needs.

1. Tailored Ingredients

This customisation is rooted in developing targeted ingredient formulations that address different skin types’ unique concerns.

For dry skin, ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, mugwort, and snail mucin are common as they deeply hydrate and restore the skin barrier to lock in moisture.

Those with oily and acne-prone skin will benefit from lightweight, oil-free formulations containing niacinamide, tea tree, and salicylic acid to help control sebum production, reduce inflammation and treat breakouts without clogging pores.

Soothing ingredients like Centella Asiatica, aloe vera and calendula are used in products for sensitive skin to calm irritation and strengthen the skin barrier.

Finally, for combination skin, products will feature balancing ingredients like propolis, green tea, and ginseng to provide hydration without overloading oily areas.

2. Diverse Product Textures

By offering such a wide variety of product textures, Korean skincare allows individuals to choose products that meet their skin’s needs.

People with oily skin can struggle with products that feel greasy and heavy as they can worsen oiliness and clog pores. K-skincare brands cater to this by offering gel moisturisers and watery serums. Gel moisturisers are water-based products that provide hydration without adding excess oil. Watery serums and toners are lightweight liquids that help balance sebum production while keeping the skin hydrated.

Dry skin requires heavier, richer products to lock in moisture and repair the skin barrier. Rich creams and balms are formulated with buttery, thick textures to deliver long-lasting hydration, melting into the skin and acting as a sealant for hydration.

Sensitive skin types benefit from lightweight, non-irritating formulations that focus on soothing and gentle textures to avoid overwhelming the skin. Essences and emulsions are ultra-light liquids that provide a burst of hydration and nutrients without any heaviness, ensuring the skin remains calm and cool to soothe redness and irritation.

Those with combination skin require textures that balance hydration without overloading oily areas or neglecting dry patches. Layerable products are perfect for combination skin types as they can benefit from different textures, such as a hydrating toner, a balancing serum, and a lightweight cream.

Richer and more luxurious textures address concerns like dryness, fine lines, and loss of elasticity in mature or aged skin. Highly concentrated serums, like ampoules with thick textures, target deep hydration while delivering anti-ageing ingredients.

The diversity in skincare textures is practical and indulgent, ensuring a pleasant user experience and making skincare more enjoyable and accessible.

3. Affordable Pricing

Another reason why K-skincare remains accessible and popular is due to its pricing. Imagine top quality and innovative products at an affordable price – what’s not to love?

Popular Korean skincare brands have cult cleansers, toners, serums and creams ranging from less than £10 – £20. Despite the low prices, these products don’t compromise on quality, so users love the idea of saving money while still getting the same ingredients that Western brands charge hundreds for.

These more reasonable prices also make it easier for customers to try out new products without breaking the bank.
